Crowns or Fillings? How We Decide and Why It Matters
The decision rule of thumb
- Filling: Small–moderate cavities/chips where enough strong tooth remains.
- Crown: Large fractures, multiple cracked cusps, or after root canal—when we need 360° protection.
Why it matters
Undertreating a weakened tooth can lead to new cracks and emergency visits; overtreating removes unnecessary tooth. The goal is conservative strength.
How we decide
Exam, bite analysis, history (clenching/grinding), and imaging help us judge remaining tooth structure.
Cost & durability
Fillings are more conservative and cost less; crowns last longer in high-stress situations.
FAQ
Can a big filling be upgraded later?
Yes, but cracks can develop—timing matters.
Do crowns look natural?
Modern ceramics match colour and translucency.
Do crowns whiten?
No—whiten first, then match shade.
