CHILDRENS DENTISTRY

Pit & Fissure Sealants

What Are Sealants?

Dental sealants are a protective clear plastic layer brushed onto the chewing surfaces of teeth to “seal them off” from plaque and bacteria that would cause cavities to form.

Does your child need them?

When your child’s adult molar erupts, usually around the age of six, you need to bring your child to check if they need dental sealants. The molar teeth are the ones that do the most chewing and have those deep crevices where bacteria can hide.

How Sealants Work?

Sealants are typically applied to the molars and its application is usually quick and painless. The sealant will fill in and cover any crevices on the tooth to act as a shield from the bacteria. The sooner they sealants are in place, the less opportunity the oral bacteria will have to build up in the crevices of the molars.

Space Maintainers

What Are Space Maintainers?

Space maintainers are orthodontic appliances that retain the space for the erupting permanent teeth. They are custom-made for each child.

Common types of appliances

Most common types of space maintainer appliances are the

  • band-and-loop device
  • the lingual holding arch
  • the trans palatal arch
  • the distal shoe appliance.

The type of appliance a child uses is determined by the missing tooth or teeth. They can be fitted to either the upper or lower jaw, on one or both sides, as needed. For children with several missing teeth, partial dentures can be effective space maintainers.

Pulpotomy

What Is Pulpotomy?

Pulpotomy or Vital Pulp Therapy is a procedure by which diseased pulp is removed from the crown of the tooth and the crown is then filled with medicated material to preserve the healthy pulp tissue in the roots. It is only recommended when the tooth is not loose and there is no swelling or abscess around it. The goal is to allow the baby tooth to stay in place and function properly until the permanent tooth is ready to erupt.

Silver Diamine Fluoride

What Is Silver Diamine Fluoride?

Silver diamine fluoride is a liquid used on cavities to arrest tooth decay. The silver helps kill the bacteria and the fluoride helps in remineralisation of the teeth. After the teeth are cleaned and dried during a regular dental visit, silver diamine fluoride is applied to the cavity on the tooth. It is a painless, non-invasive, quick and effective treatment.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Dental bonding

What is Dental Bonding?

Dental Bonding is a cosmetic procedure that uses a composite resin material to enhance your smile when discoloration, minor chips or spacing occur to your teeth.

What to do after the dental bonding treatment?

After the dental bonding it is essential to maintain proper oral hygiene as the resin can stain.

Veneers

What Are Veneers?

Veneers are thin, tooth-colored porcelain shells that cover your natural teeth. Long-lasting and natural-looking, they can protect your teeth from further damage and give you the beautiful smile you desire.

When are veneers used?

Veneers can help with any of the following issues:

  • Worn down, chipped, or broken teeth
  • Stained or discolored teeth
  • Uneven or irregularly shaped teeth
  • Gaps between teeth

Teeth Whitening

Whitening your teeth is one of the quickest and easiest ways to improve your smile. There are a lot of ways to whiten your teeth. Our professional teeth whitening treatments utilize a powerful yet safe whitening gel that is applied to the surface of the teeth. This gel works to lighten the appearance of stains, discoloration, and yellowing on the surface and below the enamel. The whitening system makes use of desensitizers — to reduce sensitivity and protect tooth enamel  and has intensity settings that can be adjusted to ensure your comfort.

We provide both in-office sessions and take-home whitening trays to work with your schedule and budget.

What causes tooth discoloration?

Discoloration occurs due to various factors, most commonly because of:

  • Certain medications
  • Consumption of staining foods and drinks, including tea, wine, coffee, and soda
  • Fluorosis
  • Illness
  • Natural aging process
  • Poor dental hygiene habits
  • Smoking and other forms of tobacco

ENDODONTIC TREATMENT

Root Canal Therapy

What is Root Canal Therapy?

Root canal therapy commonly known as Root canal is a type of endodontic therapy and is typically recommended if there is nerve damage or infection beyond the crown of a tooth. Endodontics refers to specialized treatments that affect the pulp (inside of the tooth) and the root tissue. This type of damage can occur if the tooth injury or tooth decay goes beyond the outer enamel layer of the tooth. When untreated, the infection can cause your tooth to die and then require the tooth to be extracted. A root canal can restore the health of the tooth by removing the infected/injured tissues in the tooth before the damage takes over it entirely and cannot be repaired. Once the unhealthy tissue is removed, the tooth is cleaned it is then filled with a medicated material. Upon placing the material, the tooth is then capped and the restoration will be shaped to bring your tooth back to its original shape.

Post & Core

What Is a Post and Core?

If a large enough portion of a tooth is missing, due to a cavity or the loss of a filling or the access cavity from root canal work, your dentist can’t simply place a crown on the tooth as it may not be stable enough. This is where a core comes in, replacing the missing tooth structure and providing support for the new crown. Sometimes the core is enough, but if not, a post may be added to anchor the core to the tooth.

ORAL SURGERY

Extraction

Why extract a tooth and what after the extraction?

A tooth may require extraction for a variety of reasons like the following

  • Severe infection that has destroyed a significant portion of the tooth and supporting bone structure
  • Serious decay that has damaged a tooth beyond repair, making a successful restoration impossible
  • Crowding caused by too many teeth to properly fit in the mouth

While the Doctor will try and avoid the need to remove a tooth whenever possible however based on the evaluation, they may decide to recommend a tooth extraction. Once the extraction is done and after the recovery period is over, you can then determine the best option to begin with either a prosthodontic or orthodontic treatment if required to fill in the space.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars that usually appear between the ages of 15 and 25. An average adult mouth is designed to hold around 28 teeth comfortably but most adults end up with 32 teeth. These additional four teeth are called wisdom teeth, (AKA) third molars.

Why extract Wisdom tooth?

The reason that some adults grow wisdom teeth is because throughout evolutionary history the human jaw has become smaller and smaller. Because of this the wisdom teeth become blocked or impacted by the other teeth around them. This can become extremely traumatizing. If the wisdom tooth partially erupts, food can get trapped in the tissue surrounding the tooth, which can lead to bacterial growth and possibly serious infection. While some people’s wisdom teeth come in without a hitch, it’s fairly common for these final molars to cause issues. If your wisdom teeth are coming in at an angle, causing crowding, or damaging your surrounding teeth then the doctor would usually recommend extracting it

ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT

INVISALIGN

The Invisalign system is an orthodontic treatment that uses a series of custom-made aligners for a patient to straighten their teeth. The system uses patented aligner material with proprietary virtual modeling software and a rapid manufacturing process that handles mass customization to provide the patient with the required aligner trays. The clear plastic aligner trays are then used by the patient to gradually move the teeth into proper alignment. This is achieved by wearing the trays for at least 20 hours a day over a period decided by the doctor. To allow the patients to maintain their oral health and wellness, flossing and brushing as they normally would, the aligner trays are easily removable without having to worry about brackets and wires.

RETENTION

Why Retention?

Once your braces are off, you will need retainers. The retainers are used in order to keep our teeth in their post-braces position. It is primarily because it takes time for our teeth, gums, and jaw bones to get used to this new arrangement.

What are the type of Retainers?

Retainers come in a few different varieties

Removable Retainers are the ones, whether wire and acrylic or clear plastic, have the obvious advantage that you can take them out, which makes it much easier to clean both the retainers and your teeth. Non-Removable Retainers or bonded retainers are strips of wire cemented to the backs of the teeth to hold them in their post-braces position. These retainers have the advantage of permanently ensuring that your teeth don’t shift back to their old positions, but they can make flossing between those teeth tricky. If you think you’re likely to forget to wear your removable retainers, bonded might be the perfect choice for you.

PERIODONTAL CARE

GINGIVECTOMY

What Is Gingivectomy?

Gingivectomy is a procedure to remove a portion of the gum tissue from around a tooth or teeth. It may be performed to heal the effects of periodontal disease or to correct overgrown gingiva. It is one of a few procedures that can help reverse gum disease.

How Are Gingivectomies Performed?

These surgeries are typically completed with a surgical scalpel or using a low-frequency laser. The diseased gum tissue is trimmed and removed, and then the remaining tissue is reattached around the teeth with stitches, then carefully cleaned. A local anesthetic keeps the patient comfortable during the procedure.

Gingivoplasty

What Is Gingivoplasty?

Gingivoplasty or Gum contouring is a minimally invasive oral surgery procedure that gently trims and reshapes excess gum tissue, focusing only on areas where the gums extend too far over the teeth.

What Are the Benefits?

Gum contouring has long term benefits for your oral health. Excess gum tissue can actually increase the risk of gum disease, because it leaves deeper pockets where bacteria can hide and multiply. When that extra tissue is gone, it becomes much easier to clean those bacteria away with regular brushing and flossing!

PREVENTATIVE DENTISTRY

OCCLUSAL NIGHT GUARD

What is Bruxism?

Teeth grinding during your sleep is called bruxism. Because it happens in your sleep, stopping it can be very difficult.

How a Night Guard Helps?

Wearing a night guard helps in stopping the effects on your teeth due to bruxism. It provides a cushioning effect so that your upper and lower teeth can’t wear away at each other. It protects your teeth from external damage caused by grinding, such as chipping and erosion. However, it is not a cure for a grinding habit, and as long as the grinding continues, some symptoms such as jaw pain may not change.

CUSTOM MOUTH GUARDS

Why Is a Custom Mouthguard Important?

Some interesting and important facts for consideration for custom mouthguard

  • Up to 40 percent of dental injuries are sustained during sports activities.
  • The cost of a custom mouthguard is a small fraction of the cost of dealing with dental trauma.
  • Not wearing a mouthguard makes you 60 times more likely to sustain an injury to the face and mouth.

A mouthguard custom designed for you is much more comfortable and less bulky, making talking, breathing, and swallowing easier. With a custom-fit mouthguard, you’ll enjoy added protection against cut lips, a cut tongue, and concussions.

PROSTHODONTICS

Partial Dentures

What Are Dentures?

Dentures are removable oral appliances used to replace multiple missing teeth. If you are missing several teeth or all of your teeth, dentures might be just what you need to restore the function, beauty, and health of your smile. There are two kinds of dentures: full and partial. At Northbridge Dental, we provide only partial dentures

What is a partial denture?

A partial denture is used if you are missing multiple teeth but have remaining natural teeth. A partial denture often includes a thin framework or clasps that attach to the natural teeth for a secure fit.

What are the benefits of dentures?

Dentures can improve your ability to properly speak and eat, restore your natural facial volume, and enhance the overall beauty of your smile. Your dentures will be custom made to fit your smile comfortably, aesthetically, and securely.

Crown

Why are Crown placed?

Crowns are placed to address different dental health problems that may include

  • Covering a dental implant.
  • For a cosmetic modification.
  • Protecting a broken tooth or one that has been severely worn down.
  • Covering misshapen or severely discolored teeth.
  • Protecting a weak tooth from decay or to hold parts of a cracked tooth together.
  • Restoring an already broken tooth from further damage.
  • Holding in a dental bridge.

What Are Crowns Made From?

Crowns are made from different types of material, metals, stainless steal and porcelain. Porcelain is best recommended because of its strength and cosmetic appeal. It also provides a better color match than other materials. it helps those who have metal allergies.

How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?

Crowns lasts between 5 to 15 years depending on the amount of wear and tear and your oral health habits. To help you last your crown as long as possible, it is highly recommended to stay away from chewing ice and other hard materials, grinding your teeth, biting your finger nails and opening packages with your teeth.

BRIDGE

What Is a Dental Bridge?

In order to fill the gap due to a tooth loss, no matter the cause, an option is to have a bridge that will help restore normal chewing function. The bridge replaces missing teeth with pontics (fake teeth) and is supported by attaching to the natural teeth or implants on either side of the gap. Bridges can be made from a variety of materials that differ in cost, appearance, and durability.

Why Get a Dental Bridge?

Replacing missing teeth is important for a number of reasons. The longer a tooth is gone, the more the surrounding teeth will shift towards the hole, affecting chewing and speech. The bone  will also erode over time at the place where the tooth was. Even the shape of the face is affected by missing teeth!

SEDATION

Sadation, Northbridge Dental

NITROUS OXIDE

Why We Would Recommend Sedation During Your Appointment?

Sedation helps patients feel anxiety-free and relaxed during their treatment.

Why use Nitrous Oxide for Sedation?

Nitrous oxide is commonly called laughing gas. There are several reasons to use nitrous oxide rather than complete sedation. This has been the primary way that doctors have helped patients to relieve them from anxiety. The gas is distributed through a face mask, which allows you to inhale the gas through your nose. As the anesthetic begins to work, you’ll feel a bit groggy and de-sensitized. Patients that choose to use nitrous are able to resume normal daily activities by the time the treatment is finished.

GENERAL DENTISTRY

Scaling and Root Planing

This non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure addresses progressive gum disease by removing plaque and calculus that has accumulated below the gum line. Scaling is when the dentist removes all of the plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) above and below your gumline. It’s important that they clean all the way down to the bottom of the pocket. Root planing is smoothing out your teeth roots to help your gums re-attach to your teeth. Planing helps the root surfaces become smooth, which keeps bacteria, plaque and tartar from re-adhering underneath the gumline.

Composite Fillings

What Are Composite Fillings?

Composite resins, or tooth-colored fillings, are created from white composite resins. It’s used to repair tooth damage from decay, cavities, fractures and chipping. It provides good durability and resistance to fractures that need to withstand moderate pressure from constant stress of chewing. They can be used on either front or back teeth. They are a good choice for people who prefer that their fillings look more natural.

It generally takes longer to place a composite filling than it does for a metal filling. That’s because composite fillings require the tooth be kept clean and dry while the cavity is being filled. Tooth-colored fillings are now used more often than amalgam or gold fillings, probably due to cosmetics. In a society focused on a white, bright smile, people tend to want fillings that blend with the natural color of their teeth.

ORAL CANCER SCREENING

What Is Oral Cancer Screening?

One of the best things about oral cancer screening is that it’s quick and easy and can be done during your regular cleaning appointments. The screening mainly consists of the dentist checking the tissues of your mouth for any irregularities, such as unusual textures or white or red spots. Everyone should be screened for oral cancer regularly, but it’s particularly important for those with risk factors such as smoking, tobacco use, previous history of oral cancer, alcohol use, and age.
